About the event

Romantic Spirits: Fate, Fear & Transcendence

A journey into the Romantic imagination—where fate looms, fear whispers, and music ultimately rises toward warmth and transcendence.

The Romantic era was fascinated by forces beyond human control—fate, fear, the supernatural—and by music’s power to rise above them. Romantic Spirits: Fate, Fear & Transcendence brings these ideas to life in three masterworks that chart a compelling emotional journey.

Weber’s overture to Der Freischütz plunges us into a world of myth and dark folklore, where danger and redemption exist side by side. Schubert’s Fourth Symphony, subtitled “Tragic,” follows with music of restless energy and somber intensity, revealing a young composer grappling with drama and emotional depth.

After intermission, Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 offers a striking contrast—music of warmth, lyricism, and expansive joy. Together, these works form a powerful narrative: a passage through darkness toward clarity, serenity, and transcendence.
